Red Flags

When to walk away

These warning signs mean leave the store or close the browser tab.

No GIA or AGS certification

If a jeweler pushes an in-house certificate, leave. GIA and AGS are the only trusted labs. IGI is acceptable for lab-grown.

"This deal is only available today"

High-pressure tactics are the biggest red flag. Reputable jewelers give you time. Diamonds don't spoil.

Won't show the diamond under different lighting

Showroom lighting maximizes sparkle. A great diamond looks good everywhere.

Quoting "appraised value" as the selling point

Appraisals are inflated 50–100% above retail for insurance. Don't fall for "appraised at $10K, yours for $5K."

Can't explain why they're recommending something

Good jewelers educate. Bad jewelers push margin.

No return policy or inspection period

Reputable jewelers offer 30-day returns minimum. Online retailers often offer 60–90 days.

Vague about origin

Transparency about sourcing should be enthusiastic, not evasive.

The test — If they can't explain the 4Cs, show a GIA certificate, and answer questions patiently, they don't deserve your money.
