Step 5 of 6
The origin question
One of the biggest decisions. Here are the facts without the marketing.
Lab-Grown
Key facts
- Chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds
- Created in weeks via HPHT or CVD technology
- Typically 60–80% less expensive
- Lower environmental impact
- Same hardness (10 Mohs), same sparkle
- Graded by GIA/IGI using the same 4Cs
Trade-offs
- Resale value is very low and declining
- Prices have dropped 50%+ in three years
- Some people value the natural origin story
- Not considered rare
Natural
Key facts
- Formed 1–3 billion years ago, 100+ miles underground
- Each stone is a unique geological artifact
- Better resale value
- Carries the traditional romantic narrative
- Finite supply at higher qualities
- Established grading ecosystem
Trade-offs
- Significant cost premium
- Environmental and ethical concerns
- Prices historically inflated by controlled supply
- Conflict diamonds still exist
Neither is objectively better. Lab-grown gets you a bigger, higher-quality stone for your budget. Natural gives you geological rarity and better resale. The right choice depends on your values. Both are real diamonds.
